Financial Situation in Marriages: Earning Halal & Living Wisely đ¤â¨
Money can become a source of stress in marriageâbut Islam treats finances as a religious responsibility: earn halal, spend wisely, and cooperate with sakinah even when life is tight.
1) Qurâan: Earn Halal and Avoid HarÄm Earnings
Allah commands believers to seek lawful provision:
âO mankind, eat from whatever is lawful and good on the earthâŚâ
â Surah Al-Baqarah 2:168
And Allah links halal food to obedience and goodness:
âEat of the lawful provisions which We have provided for youâŚâ
â Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172
2) Qurâan: Live Wisely (No Waste, No Harshness)
Islam forbids extravagance:
âEat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not love the excessive.â
â Surah Al-AârÄf 7:31
And Allah teaches balanced spending for family responsibilities:
ââŚand give the due to the near of kin, the needy, and the traveler⌠and do not squanderâŚâ
â Surah Al-IsrÄâ 17:26â27
3) Authentic Hadith: Spending on Your Family Is Sadaqah
The Prophet  made the household budget spiritually powerful:
âWhatever you spend on your family will be charity.â
â Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim (reported in their meanings)
So spending isnât âjust costââwhen done halal and with responsibility, it becomes worship.
4) Authentic Hadith: Donât Hoard or WasteâEven Within Marriage
A key married-life example (Companion story)
Asmaâ bint Abi Bakr (ra)âmarried to Zubair ibn al-âAwwÄm (ra)âasked the Prophet :
âI have nothing but what Zubair has. Can I spend from it?â
The Prophet  replied (meaning): Yesâspend within what is reasonable, and do not be wasteful or hoard.
â Sahih al-Bukhari (with authentic wording reported)
Lesson for finances in marriage:
Sharing responsibility is allowed when itâs reasonable (maârĹŤf) and not wasteful.
âHalal earningâ + âwise spendingâ protects love, trust, and peace.
5) Handling Tight Financial Times with Sakinah
When money is limited, donât break the marriage with panic or blame.
Allahâs mercy is that He does not burden beyond capacity:
âAllah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bearâŚâ
â Surah Al-Baqarah 2:286
And Islam encourages patience and kind living:
âAnd live with them in kindnessâŚâ
â Surah An-NisÄâ 4:19
6) Practical âHalal + Wiseâ Plan for a Married Home (Quick)
Agree on spending boundaries (needs vs desires)
Avoid waste (7:31, 17:27)
Make earning halal your identity (2:168)
Treat family spending as sadaqah (Bukhari/Muslim)
Donât weaponize money in argumentsâkeep kindness (4:19)
Budget together when possible so neither spouse feels excluded
Closing DuâÄâ đ¤
âO Allah, bless our halal earnings, put barakah in what we spend, protect our homes from waste and haram, and make our marriage a source of peace and mercy.â
